Does menopause place women at higher risk
for a clinical diagnosis of depression?

Yes. In a study by Dr. Hadine Joffe and associates from Massachusetts General Hospital, depression scores from 363 women between 40 and 60 years of age who attended a primary care clinic showed that perimenopausal women were twice as likely to have significant depressive symptoms than middle-aged premenopausal women. Hot flashes were also positively correlated with elevated depression scores.
